Just in the NYX of time!

November 21, 2017

The holidays are here—and you’ve got places to go and parties to attend. Watch our video to see Bonnie, Gordmans corporate associate and cosmetics fanatic, demonstrate her step-by-step approach to getting ready in a dash. She uses her favorite line—NYX.

1. After doing her brows, she uses the NYX eyeshadow kit to create a neutral, smokey-eye look.

2. First, she adds a neutral color to her lid.

3. She adds depth with a rich, brown shade.

4. She uses black eyeshadow on the outer portion of her eyelid to add even more depth.

5. With a simple smudge of the lash line, she creates the smokey effect.

6. A touch of blush and highlight to her cheeks adds just the right amount of glow.

7. To finish it off, she adds a NYX long-lasting lipstick for a pop of color.

And, voilá, she’s ready for whatever holiday festivities come her way!

Bachelorette Party Planning

Bachelorette Party Planning

Attention bachelorette party planners! If your best friend forever, beloved sister or cherished cousin is planning her trip down the aisle, it’s time for you to start planning the bachelorette party. If the traditional night of bar-hopping isn’t exactly the bride’s style, choose from these alternatives to make it a night to remember.

Does your guest of honor’s entourage span the ages from teen nieces to mothers and grandmothers of the bride? There’s nothing like a day at the spa to unite generations. Call ahead to your favorite local salon or day spa and book services of your choice, whether it be mani-pedis, facials or massages. As a parting gift to the bride, load up this beautiful tote with pampering gifts such as bath salts, candles and shower gel.

Pack your bags (these Pucci floral cases will do!) and get out of town for a group trip. It doesn’t matter whether you go far or stay near—it’s the company that counts! For a lower-budget getaway, book a nearby hotel with an on-site pool and restaurant and stage a staycation. For a big splurge, pick a destination that’s special to the bride—maybe that’s a road trip to Vegas a la “The Hangover,” a pool party in Palm Springs or a ski trip to Boulder—and get outta town.

If your lady wolf pack tends toward the foodie side, sign up for a cooking class together. Check with your local community college, culinary school or kitchen store for options. Be sure to snap pics of everyone in action as well as your final culinary creations, then print your favorite photos to assemble in this Friends Forever album ($3.99) to give to the bride as a keepsake.

For a dose of nostalgia, recreate a childhood memory from the bride’s childhood. That might be spending a day at an amusement park, roller rink, laser tag arena or miniature golf course. Follow up the throwback fun with a group dinner or some decidedly grown-up fun, like a round of drinks at a wine bar or karaoke at your favorite local haunt. For a keepsake for the bride from the whole crew, have all each guest add a message or doodle on this autograph frame ($12.99).

Winter Skincare

February 24, 2017

Winter Skincare

Between the dry air and cold temps, winter weather can really wreak havoc on your skin. With serene scents and mint green, frosted glass packaging fit for a spa, e.l.f.’s skincare line is just what you need to survive the waning days of winter … and use happily the rest of the year, too! Here’s the lowdown on five of our favorites.

Hydrating Gel Melt Cleanser ($10)

This gentle, shape-shifting cleanser starts as a smooth gel in the jar and then melts into a creamy lather in your hands. Nourishing ingredients such as argan oil, rose seed oil and vitamin C sooth your skin while removing makeup and dirt.

Tip: Make this your first step in your skincare routine in the morning and at night.

Hydrating Bubble Mask ($14)

This addictive mask is unlike any other we’ve tried before. First, you apply the clear gel to your face, being careful to avoid your eyes, nostrils and lips. Then, watch as the gel puffs up into a foamy, bubbly layer on top of your skin. How cool is that? Unlike sticky clay masks, which can be a challenge to wash off, this rinses clean quickly.

Tip: Secure your hair with a stretchy headband to keep flyaways from sticking to the mask.

Soothing Serum ($12)

Serums are seriously trending for their concentrated moisturizing power and anti-aging properties. This clean-smelling serum easily smooths over your skin and features shea butter, jojoba and aloe.

Hint: Apply the serum to your neck as well as your face at night before you to go bed. Allow to sink in before you add other products, such as eye cream (see below).

Illuminating Eye Cream ($10)

Here’s a secret of makeup artists everywhere: Eye cream is the key to getting a smooth application of concealer under and around your eyes. This cream is infused with Vitamin E, which blocks free radicals in the body to keep skin looking plump.

Tip: Use your ring finger to dab on the cream gently under your eye, from the bridge of your nose to your temple. You don’t want to pull or tug on the delicate skin around your eyes, so be as gentle as possible!

Daily Hydration Moisturizer ($8)

Serums and eye creams are perfect for nighttime, but to protect your skin from the elements during the day, you need a light but potent moisturizer. Thanks to aloe and cucumber, this daily hydration formula smells delicious and provides a protective barrier for your skin.

Hint: Apply before you put on your makeup in the morning to give a smooth foundation for your favorite cosmetics.

Your frock: A wild graphic pattern like this floral dress, will surely make you the center of attention. The perfect black lace up wedges and a funky fringed necklace are just the right accompaniment.

Your fragrance: Paris Hilton Heiress, a girl-power scent with notes of juicy passion fruit and orange as well as subtle star jasmine and violet.

Your frock: A low cut neckline, scoop back, and dual color detail make this black lace number so delicate and feminine. Nude heels and jewel-encrusted stud earrings are the perfect accessories.

Your frock: This darling dress takes a traditional springtime floral print and adds that Valentines flare in red and black. The sweetheart neckline frames your face, so all you need to top off the outfit are simple hoop earrings and peep-toe booties.

Your fragrance: Calvin Klein Eternity Moment, a floral-forward blend of Chinese pink peony, passion flower, musk and rosewood.

Easy Hairstyles for After Your Workout

January 10, 2017

Congratulations! You set a goal this year of getting healthy and you are actually working out! That in itself deserves claps all around. But now you face the problem of either running straight to work, errands or brunch with workout hair.  In order to help you get on with your day we have three quick and easy hairstyles that will have your friends handing out the compliments upon your arrival.

Ponytail + Side Braids

braid, ponytails

Fun side braids with ponytail

Details and texture are what make this once plain ponytail a lot more special. For this style you will need a comb, three ponytail holders and some smoothing cream. Comb out hair and section your hair off and create the braid on each side. In order for the braid to lay flat against your head you will need to braid your hair in the direction you want it to lay. Braid hair  up to where you want your ponytail to sit and secure each braid with a ponytail holder. Next, pull all your hair up to a ponytail and secure with an elastic. Use smoothing cream to tame any flyaways. You can really customize this style, if you want the braids to be a little wider, just slightly pull out sections of the braid to create a thicker braid. You can also create some volume at the crown of the head for a fuller looking hairstyle or simply pull your hair back into the ponytail.

Braided Pony

Braided ponytail

Easy braided ponytail

Even if you are not a hair guru you can make this easy braided ponytail and be on your way to brunch in no time. You will need a comb, high hold hairspray and two ponytail holders. Comb through hair, make a high ponytail and secure with elastic. Divide ponytail into three sections and braid ponytail till you reach the end, secure with second elastic. Spray hair with hairspray for extra hold. Easy peasy.

French Ponytail

French ponytail

French braid to ponytail

For this hairstyle you will need to know how to French braid. All you need is some high hold hair spray, comb and pony tail holder. Simply brush out hair with comb and flip hair over. Take sections of hair and french braid starting at the nape of the neck to where you want your ponytail to sit. Secure ponytail with elastic and spray hair for good hold. Leave wispy hairs down for a more casual look.

With these three looks you will be on your way out of the gym with a great hairstyle in no time!

New Year’s Eve: Wear Now & Later

December 30, 2016

Do us a favor and take a peek in the very back of your closet. How many outfits have been relegated there, collecting dust from New Year’s Eves past? To make your money go a long way this holiday season, mix-and-match special-occasion pieces with more casual threads that will look super-snazzy during the countdown and still have future life in your wardrobe after the ball drops.

Sequin dress + denim jacket

Wear now: The combination of a formal fabric such as sequined lace with a laid-back choice like denim is so unexpected and fun for the holiday season.

Wear later: Trot out that dress and add a pastel cardigan and you’ll be set for an Easter brunch or a spring wedding. And the denim jacket? Wear it over almost anything, from a sweater and leggings for winter weekends or a breezy sundress come summer.

Crop top + full skirt

Wear now: This two-piece outfit matches a trendy crop top with a midnight blue lace overlay with a short skirt that has just the enough volume to look festive.

Wear later: Dress down the skirt by pairing it with a graphic tee and Levis sneakers, or a tucked-in chambray shirt, tights and booties. Or layer on a leather or pleather biker jacket over this whole ensemble to rock a punk princess look.

Lace top + black leggings

Wear now: The lacy insets on this flowy tunic top adds such an eye-catching detail to the shoulders and back. Match it with sleek black leggings and your favorite knee-high boots or booties (heeled or flat, anything goes) and you’re ready for a champagne toast!

Wear later: Match the tunic with a bright blazer and dark denim for a sharp casual Friday outfit for the office. Or layer a bright-hued tee underneath and the pop of color will show through beneath the lace!

Swing dress + cardigan sweater

Wear now: With its mock turtle neckline and swingy silhouette, this LBD couldn’t be more on-trend for ringing in 2017. Cover your shoulders with this bold Aztec-print cardigan and you’ll be cozy enough to brave the winter winds.

Wear later: The cardigan can continue to be a staple sweater throughout the winter, matched with your favorite pair of jeans or a denim skirt and tights. Come summer, don’t hesitate to throw on the dress with your favorite wedge sandals or even wear it as a swimsuit cover-up.

Summer Sun Safety

May 6, 2016

Protecting your skin from sun damage is important year-round, but it’s especially top of mind come summer. Longer days, stronger rays and outdoor play mean that practicing proper sun safety should be a priority for the whole family. Here are 6 tips to keep in mind:

Slather on SPF

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends sunscreen for all, regardless of your age or skin color, to prevent skin cancer and aging. Look for a broad spectrum sunscreen (that means it protects against both types of rays, UVA and UVB rays, responsible for wrinkles and sunburn, respectively) with an SPF value of 30 or more. Spray sunblocks are super-convenient, but sometimes make it tough to tell whether you’ve applied enough. The AAD recommends applying 1 ounce (the size of shot glass) of liquid sunscreen to make sure you’re all covered. Don’t forget the tops of your feet, tops of ears, back of neck and shoulders, and buddy up for an extra hand reaching tough spots like your back. There’s nothing worse than a sunburned scalp (seriously … ouch!) so pay special attention to your hairline and part.

More than makeup

Even if your foundation has a fancy “Now with SPF 15!” label on it, chances are you aren’t applying enough for significant coverage. Add a separate moisturizer with SPF 30 or greater to your morning makeup routine, especially on days you’ll be outdoors. And don’t forget, your lips can get sunburned, too! Look for a lipstick or lip balm that has an SPF of 30 or more and reapply every two hours.

Cover up

Physically covering your skin is a smart safeguard, too. Wearing a short-sleeve top versus a tank could safe your shoulders on a long sunny hike, and rashguards—water-friendly tops worn over your swimsuit that also happen to be super-trendy right now—can keep your family covered at the waterpark or beach. Portable beach umbrellas are an easy way to take cover in areas where shade can be hard to find.

Hat’s on

Sporting a wide-brimmed hat is one of the very best ways to protect your precious face on a sunny day. Luckily, the styles out there couldn’t be more stylish, from breezy straw fedoras to beachy sun hats. The wider the brim, the better it’ll shade not just your ears and forehead, but the back of your neck, too.

Cool shades

Sunglasses are a summer fashion staple, but they can also protect your eyes and the delicate skin around your eyes, too. But not all shades are created equal: Look for a sun protection rating of UV400 or higher; which means they’ll block 99.9 percent of the sun’s rays.

Tan safely

If you’re still seeking a sun-kissed blow, dodge the damage with bronzers and sunless tanners. A bronzer is a temporary color that washes off when you hit the showers; sunless tanners (also called self tanners) work by temporarily darkening the top layer of your skin. For a bit of summer glow, try dusting bronzing powder on your cheekbones, nose and forehead. Sunless tanning lotions and sprays have also come a long way—they’re less foul-smelling and more natural than years ago—so if you were scarred by a past faux pas that left you orange-handed, consider giving the newest formulas a chance.

Whether your warm-weather adventures involve surfing lessons, a family bike ride or a day at the beach, arriving home sans sunburn is worth the extra effort. Happy summer!

6 Crossbody Bags For Spring

March 9, 2016

Clutches are cute and totes are practical, but the purse that will get you through the spring is the trusty crossbody bag. The perfect mix of fashion and functionality, crossbodies have the hands-off convenience of a backpack with the details of a stylish handbag. Check out a few of our favorites here, plus tips on what gear to stash inside.

Nicole Miller Liberty Front Flap Turnlock Diet Suede Crossbody Bag, $29.99

We love the simple, modern hardware and suede-like finish on this bag. For a go-with-everything neutral, try the soft gray Dove, or bright yellow Citron for a shot of color.

3 Zip Cross Body Bag, $19.99

Triple-decker gold zippers add an eye-catching touch and extra space to stow cards, keys and coupons. Dark Red is a deep coral hue that would complement any nautically inspired white and navy outfit, while Mustard is an on-trend accent color to punch up your closet.

East West Lace Crochet Panel Crossbody Bag, $14.99

From the Easter egg color options (pastel yellow, mint, coral or soft gray) to the pretty floral lace inset pocket, this little number just screams spring.

With a zipper-split front flap, thin crossbody strap and clean-lined edges, this bag is just the right addition to a minimalist look. The deep berry color will help anchor a lighter-hued spring outfit and will have staying power going into the fall, too.

2 Tone Front Flap and Buckles Crossbody Bag

A trio of neutrals—bright white, toffee brown, beachy tan—will make this bag a springtime wardrobe workhorse. It could match just as easily with jeans and a breezy blouse for an afternoon on the town as a sweet eyelet dress for a spring wedding.
