Bachelorette Party Planning

February 27, 2017

Bachelorette Party Planning

Attention bachelorette party planners! If your best friend forever, beloved sister or cherished cousin is planning her trip down the aisle, it’s time for you to start planning the bachelorette party. If the traditional night of bar-hopping isn’t exactly the bride’s style, choose from these alternatives to make it a night to remember.

SPA DAY

Does your guest of honor’s entourage span the ages from teen nieces to mothers and grandmothers of the bride? There’s nothing like a day at the spa to unite generations. Call ahead to your favorite local salon or day spa and book services of your choice, whether it be mani-pedis, facials or massages. As a parting gift to the bride, load up this beautiful tote with pampering gifts such as bath salts, candles and shower gel.

WEEKEND GETAWAY

Pack your bags (these Pucci floral cases will do!) and get out of town for a group trip. It doesn’t matter whether you go far or stay near—it’s the company that counts! For a lower-budget getaway, book a nearby hotel with an on-site pool and restaurant and stage a staycation. For a big splurge, pick a destination that’s special to the bride—maybe that’s a road trip to Vegas a la “The Hangover,” a pool party in Palm Springs or a ski trip to Boulder—and get outta town.

GO GOURMET

If your lady wolf pack tends toward the foodie side, sign up for a cooking class together. Check with your local community college, culinary school or kitchen store for options. Be sure to snap pics of everyone in action as well as your final culinary creations, then print your favorite photos to assemble in this Friends Forever album ($3.99) to give to the bride as a keepsake.

RETRO FUN

For a dose of nostalgia, recreate a childhood memory from the bride’s childhood. That might be spending a day at an amusement park, roller rink, laser tag arena or miniature golf course. Follow up the throwback fun with a group dinner or some decidedly grown-up fun, like a round of drinks at a wine bar or karaoke at your favorite local haunt. For a keepsake for the bride from the whole crew, have all each guest add a message or doodle on this autograph frame ($12.99).

Comment below and tell us what other fun ideas you have for a bachelorette party!

How Gordmans Helps Pets in Need

February 17, 2017
Pet

At Gordmans we LOVE pets! In fact we have a pet day where you can bring your pet in to shop at any Gordmans store, (learn more here). Shopping with your pet is extra fun, plus we love seeing what types of pets our guests have. In the past we’ve had everything from dogs, cats, a monkey, and even a chicken! We, like many of our guests, are dedicated to helping out animals in any way that we can.

How We Give Back to Pets

dog

Gordmans works with vendors that give back to the pet community. From donating a portion of the proceeds to helping animals, or providing meals for dogs, we strive to work with these vendors to give our furry friends the love they deserve.

MuttNation Foundation

pets

MuttNation Foundation was founded in 2009 by Miranda Lambert and her mother Bev Lambert.  Together they have created an organization that is striving to find a forever home for every dog. This mission is supported by a host of volunteers and partnerships with shelters across the country to provide spay and neuter programs, medical treatments, adoptions, prevention’s, transportation, and education. Every MuttNation Fueled by Miranda Lambert purchase helps fund the rescue and adoption programs of MuttNation Foundation.

Dog for Dog

pet

The goal of Dog for Dog is to feed every shelter dog in the USA. Now, that is a challenge! By providing food to shelters, this frees up dollars to pay for medial care and getting dogs forever homes. The average shelter dog food cost is around $50, about $1.66 per day. With every purchase they give an equal amount of food to dogs in need, pound for pound. Not only do they sell dog food but they also have treats, spa products, training merchandise and pet beds.  You can find select products at your local Gordmans.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)

ASPCA’s mission is to provide effective means for the prevention for cruelty to animals throughout the US. In 2015, with the help of nearly 2 million supporters across the country, the ASPCA was able to rescue or assist more than 12,000 animals, facilitate over 4,600 adoptions, perform more than 54,300 spay/neuter surgeries and provide over $12.5 million in grants to animal welfare organizations.

When you purchase an ASPCA pet product at Gordmans, a portion of the proceeds are donated to help the ASPCA continue this life-saving work.

Humane Society of the United States

Most people are familiar with The Humane Society of the United States, which has a rich history and was founded in 1954.They advocate for all animals, from cats and dogs to farm animals, working to prevent animal fighting, puppy mills, factory farming and wildlife trade. They also work diligently to pass anti-cruelty laws and take care of more than 100,000 animals each year. When purchasing their products at Gordmans, 8% is going back to help these animals.

Pets are a very important part of many people’s lives and Gordmans is proud to be able to give back through these charities.

9 Sweet Valentine’s Day Treats

9 Sweet Valentine’s Day Treats

A bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates might be the most traditional, but when it comes to Valentine’s Day gift-giving, there is so much more out there to show your affection for the ones you love. Whether you’re looking for a special surprise for your spouse, child or friend (and don’t forget to treat yourself, too!), these options are as sweet as can be.

The hand-made details—a dark denim rosette, metallic heart cut-out and hand lettering—of this wood-grained Love Frame ($11.99) make it an extra-special perch for a favorite photo.

How cute is this Together Makes Life Beautiful pillow ($9.99)? One side features a heartfelt message, while the other is covered edge to edge with x’s and o’s.

With its heathered gray tones, comfy knit fabric and sweet screenprint, this Inspired Hearts Hacci Raglan Hoodie ($19.99) should be required attire for a cozy movie Valentine’s Day date at home.

Whether or not it’s sandals season where you live, you can’t help but go googly-eyed after one look at these Emoji Heart Eyes Flip Flops ($3.99).

Any modern romantics in the house? If you prefer crisp and clean-cut designs to pink, red and frills, pick up this Derek Heart High Neck Screen Tank ($4.99) with a simple black-and-white motif that nods to Valentine’s Day without seeming overly sappy.

With it’s powder pink hue and sugar-sweet message, this Heart String Art ($9.99) is just the right fit for the littlest valentine in your life. Bonus points for adding these utterly adorable Rainbow Heart Sunglasses ($3.99)

Wear your heart on your sleeve with this Crystal Bangle with Heart ($7.99). Between the rose gold-tone metal and the twinkly crystal heart and band, it’s right-on for Valentine’s Day.

Lapel pins are making a comeback, big-time! Your BFF would really dig the Orion 3 Piece Bff Heart and Donut Pins ($3), which would look super-cute pinned on a jean jacket or backpack.

Couples Game Night Ideas

February 13, 2017

Valentine’s Day is the biggest date night of the year, but that doesn’t mean you’re obligated to vie for a reservation at a fancy restaurant like everyone else in town. Hosting your own game night for two at home can bring out your playful sides. We’ve got four different game night suggestions to choose from based on when you met your partner. Pick from the options below and, in the end, everyone wins!

IN GRADE SCHOOL

Take yourself back in time with some of your favorite childhood pastimes. Play card games such as Go Fish or Uno, or whimsical board games such as Candyland, Chutes & Ladders or Twister.
On the menu: Continue the old-school theme by making mac ’n’ cheese, hot dogs or PBJs. Then, pick your favorite lunchroom drink and make re-imagine it as an adult beverage with the addition of your favorite spirit. Vodka and lemonade or rum and Hawaiian Punch are obvious choices, but you’re only limited by your own creativity (Ecto Cooler and Midori, anyone?). For dessert, popsicles, pudding cups or ice cream cones would be the perfect finishing touch.

IN HIGH SCHOOL

If you and your sweetie met in high school, take a trip down memory lane with a game that reminds you a sport you played, like Table Top Tennis, or tried-and-true a classic such as Monopoly. To really harken back to the kissing games of your youth, surprise your partner with a two-person game of Spin the Bottle or 7 Minutes in Heaven.
On the menu: Assemble a spread of snacks inspired by your favorite nostalgic treats of the time. Depending on when you met, that might be anything from pizza bagels to Doritos to s’mores. Make a toast with whichever soda you loved as a teenager–maybe it’s Dr. Pepper or Orange Crush–served in champagne flutes just for fun.

IN COLLEGE

Did you hit it off with your significant other at freshmen orientation, chemistry lab or a Greek party? Then a college-themed game night is just the ticket. See if you still have your drinking game prowess with the Bingo Shot Glass Game or Boozeball Shot Glass Game.
On the menu: This one’s a no brainer: Pizza and beer, of course! Order delivery from your favorite local pizzeria or buy all the fixing at the grocery store (dough, cheese, sauce and your favorite toppings) and roll one out together.

IN THE REAL WORLD

If you met as adults, it’s time to break out those board games that are just for grown-ups: Think Cards Against Humanity, Battle of the Sexes, Dirty Minds or Rotten Apples.
On the menu: Recreate a meal from one of your early dates, whether that was burgers and fries and a bar or a multi-course meal at a swanky restaurant. Or for less time in the kitchen and more time relaxing, throw a wine party for two with a cheese and charcuterie platter and a bottle of your favorite vino.

Homemade Raspberry Valentine Pop Tarts

February 10, 2017

Homemade Raspberry Valentine Pop Tarts

As a kid of the 80’s, Valentine’s Day meant making valentines boxes out of whatever you could find at home-most of us getting really creative with a cereal or shoe box, construction paper, tin foil, or any other materials we could find around the house.  It meant buying “valograms” for 25 cents through student council to send to your friends.  It meant exchanging valentine cards and all the excitement in seeing what candy you would get.  It meant a school party, where the afternoon was spent eating unhealthy food and playing games.  It was a day full of sugar and sweetness in so many ways!

These days, my favorite thing about Valentine’s Day is just showing the love to those in our lives! Whether homemade valentines sent in the mail, or fun messages wrote to classmates, just personalizing and actually putting love into whatever you give means a lot to some of us.  My favorite is baking fun and yummy treats to give to neighbors, friends, and even mail to our loved ones miles away!!! It’s just a good feeling to know you are thought of!  So this Valentine’s day, give your hand a try at these Raspberry Valentines Heart Shaped Pop Tarts.  Anyone receiving these is sure to feel the love this Valentine’s Day.

Raspberry Valentine Pop Tarts

Pastry Dough:

2 C flour

1 Tbsp sugar

1/2 tsp salt

1 C butter room temp

2 egg yolks

¼ C milk

Filling:

Raspberry jam

Egg Wash:

1 egg white

1 Tbsp water

(use fork to beat together) and set aside

Icing:

1 C Powder Sugar

1 Tbsp Cream

½ tsp almond flavoring

1 Tbs raspberry jam

(can add some red food coloring if you want icing darker)

Combine flour, sugar, and salt in large bowl.   Cut in 1C unsalted butter with pastry blender.  In separate bowl combine 2 egg yolks and 1/4 C milk. Using pastry blender mix with dry ingredients. Refrigerate dough overnight.

Roll dough (on floured surface) 1/8 inch thick (do not roll thicker, they rise).  Cut out heart shapes and place on parchment lined baking sheets. (I use airbake sheets).  Makes about 15 hearts(top and bottoms) of medium sized cookie cutter.  I divided dough in half so I knew how many bottoms I had.

Use a small melon baller to place two small drops of raspberry jam as shown.  Use finger to run egg wash around edges of hearts, place another heart on top and gently press around edges being careful not to squeeze jam out.  Then take small chopstick end and press around edges to seal.  Lightly brush with egg white wash and then bake at 350 degrees for 15-18mins, move to cooling rack.  Once completely cooled drizzle with frosting mixture. Let dry before placing in wax paper bags or storage.

Hot Fudge Lava Cakes

February 10, 2017
Hot Fudge Lava Ckes

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, I like to stay home and cook for my wife. It’s easier than fighting through the crowds and is a nice gesture for some brownie points. Usually after I plan the meal I want something simple to make for dessert. Hot fudge lava cakes are always a hit and we have made it a tradition in our house.

Ingredients

These hot fudge lava cakes are made with ingredients you probably already have in the pantry and only take about ten minutes to get in the oven. Easy peasy.  Brownie points, here I come.

ingredients for lava cakes

Melt the butter and chocolate together in a microwave safe dish.

butter and chocolate

Mix It

Mix together the melted butter and melted chocolate to create a chocolate-y goodness base. Then add in your powdered sugar and eggs.

lava cake mix

Mix everything till it is combined.

mix it lava cakes

Pour It

Pour the batter in to well greased individual sized cups. I use some ramekins that we already had on hand. They work great to make any individual sized treat.

lava cakes in dish

Bake It

Bake up these puppies and be ready for the chocolate-y goodness. The best part about these is that they don’t have to come out of the dish perfect. If they crack a little is just lets you show off your culinary skills and how good you are at making chocolate lava flow from a perfect little cake.

chocolate lava cakes

See, it doesn’t have to be perfect like your spouse. Just put a plate with chocolate on it and she will be just fine.

Chocolate lava

Finishing Touches

You could really add anything to these perfect little lava cakes to garnish them. Raspberries, a sprig of mint, ice cream, caramel or melted peanut butter. I mean it’s chocolate so ya, add anything. Today I’m adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a chocolate drizzle. I call this valentine fancy.

Grab a spoon and dig in.

Lava Cakes

Now you have a sweet treat sure to wow your significant other this Valentine’s Day!

Ingredients

4 squares semi-sweet baking chocolate
½ cup butter
1 c of powdered sugar
2 eggs
2 egg yolks
6 tbsp flour

Directions

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees
Butter custard cups or souffle dishes
Microwave the chocolate and butter for one minute on high or until butter is melted.
Stir with a wire whisk until chocolate is completely melted.
Stir in sugar until it is well blended.
Whisk in eggs and egg yolks.
Stir in flour.
Divide the batter between prepared custard cups.
Bake 12-14 minutes or until sides are firm, but centers are soft.
Let stand one minute.
Carefully run a knife around the cakes to loosen.
Plate and serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

A Gordmans Love Story

January 28, 2017
gordmans love story

Love is in the air at Gordmans in Springfield, Illinois! Sales Associate, Erica met the man of her dreams while working at Gordmans. And from there a Gordmans love story blooms.

gordmans love story

How They Met

4 years ago, while in graduate school, Erica was working as a part time Sales Associate during the holidays. When doing markdowns in the Juniors department she noticed Joseph.  He was a cute guy who kept walking by the Juniors department, who was probably not shopping for Juniors clothing. He approached her and told her she was really beautiful and gave her his contact information.

Lost Information

Erica didn’t contact him right away. In fact, she thought she lost his contact information. 3 months later she was cleaning and found the business card that Joseph had given her. She took the plunge and called him and they talked for hours. This then lead to a first date. The rest of this love story is history.

Gordmans Love story

The Proposal

Erica and Joseph were going to a friend’s early surprise birthday party. While she was busy with all the details of what to wear he was busy planning a surprise proposal at the end of the night. He was nervous but when it came time to give a toast he got up and started talking about Erica and got down on one knee. She said Yes! And the restaurant cheered them on!

The Engagement Photos

Since it all began at Gordmans they decided to do their engagement photo session at Gordmans.  This captured how they met and became a truly unique way to set their photos apart from everyone else.

The Wedding

In full planning mode Erica has most of the plans made for their special day. In fact, a week after the proposal she had the major plans already confirmed. Of course her colors are purple, just like Gordmans! She is adding her own unique touch with DIY projects for centerpieces, glittering the bridesmaid shoes and Joseph is even helping custom design the invitation.

A big thanks to Erica and Joseph for sharing their story with us!

Gear Up and Get Healthy for the New Year

January 24, 2017

When the calendar turns over to a new year, “get healthy” is the one of the most popular resolutions. But now it’s nearly the end of January and so many of us are left wondering how exactly to go about making healthier choices, whether that’s at home, at the gym or at work. Here are six ways to make healthy lifestyle choices in 2017, matched with the perfect gear to help get you there.

Prep Your Portions

Whether you’re counting calories for weight loss or just keeping an eye on nutrition, portion control is a helpful strategy to make sure all your food group are represented. Look for color-coded containers to measure protein, fat, carbs, fruits and veggies to piece together a perfectly balanced meal.

Try this: Portion Control Containers, at select Gordman’s locations

Food portion containers make it easy to portion out your food.

Start With a Smoothie

Kicking off your day with a smoothie is a great way to get in a serving of fruit or veggies right off the bat. Start with frozen fruit (try strawberries or pineapple), add a handful of spinach (you’ll hardly taste it, we promise) and your choice of protein (dairy milk, nut milk or protein powder). Then blend it until smooth, add a straw and you’re good to go.

Try this: Nutri Ninja Blender with Recipe Book ($69.99)

http://www.gordmans.com/for-the-home/kitchen/small-appliances/nutri-ninja-blender-with-recipe-book-112802737.html#q=blender&start=1

Pack Your Lunch

Did you resolve to eat less processed food this year? One easy way is to bring your own lunch to work instead of eating out. Pick up a new insulated lunchbox–like one that shows off your pride for your alma mater–to make the experience more fun. Make sure to pack some afternoon munchies (nuts, dried fruit and raw veggies are tasty and wholesome) to keep your appetite satisfied when you have the urge to slink past the vending machine.

Try this: Wisconsin Velcro Lunch Bag ($5.99)

A fun lunch box will help you get your lunch packed everyday

Try Yoga

Practicing yoga can do wonders for the brain and the body, but studio classes can be expensive. Create a DIY studio experience at home with the help of a yoga DVD (pick your level), or even easier, search YouTube for free instructional videos.

Try this: Fine Life Yoga Ball ($4.90)

http://www.gordmans.com/jewelry-and-accessories/accessories/fitness-accessories/yoga-ball-red-107116173.html#q=yoga&start=17

Flex Your Muscles

Strength training is a great way to not only build muscle tone, but also improve bone density (important to avoid osteoporosis later in life) and your mood, too. Grab some light hand weights (anything from 5 to 10 pounds, depending on your ability and comfort level) and add some bicep and tricep curls to your regimen.

Try this: RBD 8-pound Hand Weights ($7.99)

http://www.gordmans.com/jewelry-and-accessories/accessories/fitness-accessories/8-lbs.-hand-weights-111891916.html#start=1

Stay Hydrated

We all know that drinking enough water helps flush out toxins, prevent headaches and keep your digestive system in working order, but it’s still a struggle to drink those much-needed 8 to 10 glasses a day. With a pretty water bottle in hand, you’re that much more likely to meet the mark.

Try this: Metallic Swirl Water Bottle, $9.99

Unexpected Gift Wrapping Ideas

December 8, 2016

It’s hard not to feel a twinge of envy when you show up at a holiday gift exchange to see boxes decorated with Martha Stewart-like prowess … especially when your gifts, by comparison look like you handed your kindergartener a roll of tape and let them do the honors!

Don’t be intimidated: Stepping up your gift-wrapping game is easier than you think. All you have to do is pick which of these three styles best fits your holiday vibe, read up on our easy-to-execute tips and get wrapping!

9-new 10-new

RUSTIC

If you love the modern farmhouse look, you can easily infuse your gift-wrapping with a bit of country-chic flair. First, start with brown craft paper as your base. Next, wrap each box length- and width-wise with red ribbon. Use part of your gift as an extra piece for the outer layer, for example wrap the belt you’re giving around the outside of the package. For the finishing touch, tuck in a bit of faux greenery—like a faux evergreen pick, a clutch of berries or a pussywillow stem—or tie on a burlap tag (look for star- or tree-shaped ones at your local craft store) with twine. For DIY bonus points, cut an initial-shaped tag out of cardboard (try the reverse side of a cereal or cracker box), write your message with a gold pen and affix with double-stick tape.

6-new

GLAM

For a luxe, sophisticated look, think metallic from start to finish. Begin with foiled wrapping paper in a rich metallic tone such as gold, silver or copper. Solids make for a simple canvas, while florals, quatrefoil and other geometric prints can add an extra layer of visual interest. If you have two coordinating papers that you like, use one to wrap the present fully and use the second to make a contrasting band. Then, embellish with a bundle of silvery curling ribbon or wrap with glittery grosgrain ribbon. For a stunning finishing touch, tie on a celestial ornament such as this sequin star.

1-new 2-new

JOLLY

If you adore all the traditional trappings of the holiday season, grant yourself permission to go all-out holly jolly with your gift-wrapping this year. Choose a base wrap, whether it be a fun wrapping paper or a cotton wrap like these cute leg warmers!  Choose a bow or ribbon in shades of cherry red, apple green and bright green. If you’re so inclined, have fun with a theme, like matching white- and red-striped ribbon (think candy canes) with a gingerbread man ornament, or pairing snowmen-covered wrapping paper with a hand-cut snowflake pasted on top.

P.S. Having the right tools for the job will help keep your wrapping momentum going, so be sure to have a sharp pair of scissors (a must for cutting straight edges and curling ribbon) and a full roll of tape at the ready.
