Holiday Gift Ideas with Cranberry Tantrums

December 8, 2017

Happy December! Tis the season for eggnog, gift wrapping, Christmas trees and holiday movies! Let the festivities begin!

I am personally very excited about the holiday season that’s why I’m thrilled to be teaming up with Gordmans again to show you how to put together some amazing gift baskets for your friends and family, on a budget! Last time I showed you how to style an amazing holiday look on a budget (link here) and now we are spreading the love to some of the favorite people in our lives.

I’ll be honest! If you ever shop at Gordmans, one gift would not feel enough because there are so many amazing options at such amazing prices. That’s why I’m opting for gift baskets this year. Gift baskets are wonderful because you can put together all the things that special person in your life loves! It’s literally the gift that keeps on giving! I prefer to go with a theme where all the items can be used together and I’ll show you some quick and easy ideas!

For this post, I have selected three friends with particularly different tastes!

Start off with a basket you would like to use, which I got at Gordmans for $7 or a gift box! I loved the one I used because it has a metallic simmer finish which already has a festive air so minimal decorating is needed! Stuff in some packaging paper to elevate your gifts for better viewing. However, It doesn’t literally have to be a basket, it could be a cute bag, or fancy tray which you can top off with a bow. Get creative!!

Now the fun part starts, select a theme and fill that basket up!!! Here are some ideas.

For the Chocolate Lover

Oh you know, that friend that has such a sweet tooth! Chocolate everything! Hot Chocolate with breakfast, chocolate snacks in their purse or the coworker that always seems to have a chocolate stash in their drawer for whenever you need a sugar boost!!! This is the perfect gift for them. It costs only $30. Gordmans has such a wide selection of sweets in the cutest packages! I absolutely loved the wine bottle filled with the assorted chocolate bites, and the cute  coffee mugs that come with the hot chocolate packets, chocolate pretzels and chocolate bites! It’s comes in a set for three, you only see two photographed here because I helped myself to one (sorry not sorry lol). It was amazing!

For the Fragrance Junkie

For that friend that loves to collect all the latest and finest fragrant lotions and body wash! The one that always has lotion in her purse when your dry and thirsty hands need some love. Or the one whose bathroom you always love using because it smells like a spa!! This is the perfect gift for her/him. Put together some new scents, lotions and bath bombs together for the perfect gift basket. It is thoughtful and also a nice way to say thank you for depleting their supply of hand lotion all year round! (Guilty)!

For the Bling Queen

A perfect gift for that friend that loves jewelry! All from Gordmans, I picked out a sparkly little bag where she can store her jewelry while on the go! I also picked out the most gorgeous watch for an astounding prize of $13!! It’s great quality and so pretty! A matching necklace ($14) and earrings ($11) seemed like the perfect gift to go with it!!! This set goes with almost any look and she would love it especially with New Year’s eve around the corner!

Ok fine! You caught me! This gift may or may not be for me! I am in the process of redecorating myself and I thought of how amazing it would be if someone got me all of these accents for my tables and shelves! I’m sure there is a friend in your life that has an office, loves to decorate, recently got a new place or just likes shiny objects around their home. I set this all up in a gorgeous basket which can be used as an center piece holder or in the bathroom to organize all your lotions and creams! I recommend knowing what theme or accent your friend has going in their apartment so you can co-ordinate accordingly. Stick with the theme and score major points with them! All of these cost under $40 from Gordmans!

I think I am sticking with the gift basket idea for this season. How about you? Hope this post was helpful in getting some ideas going for your own gift baskets from Gordmans.

Give the Gift of Luxury for Under $30!

November 28, 2017

Participating in a Secret Santa gift exchange with a spending limit? Have a long list of people to gift and want to spend responsibly? There’s no need to compromise your luxurious standards when gift shopping this holiday season. All the designer items I found in today’s gift guide are under $30. Want in on the secret? I found everything at Gordmans! Keep reading to explore all the Gordmans designer gifts I scored.

Gordmans Designer Gifts

2017 has been the year of Gucci. So, if you’re looking for an easy way to impress a woman on your list, give her Gucci. And, Gordmans is making that easy and affordable. Gucci Flora, a sophisticated floral fragrance that retails for $92, is available at Gordmans for only $54.99. Great deal, right? It gets better. When I checked out, this popular perfume rang up for only $27.48!

Naturally, I did what any savvy shopper would do. I returned to the fragrance section and grabbed an extra bottle for myself.

Burberry fragrances are among my favorite scents. So, when I spotted the My Burberry gift set, which features a limited edition fragrance, I knew it would make the perfect gift. And, the best part? This set retails for about $60. At Gordmans, it’s only $19.99. You can buy the entire set and use the individual minis as stocking stuffers or the sweet treat in a gift bag you curate.

Who doesn’t love a good manicure? The Kerry Washington x OPI collaboration last year was well-received. After all, we Scandal fans all want to channel our inner Gladiators. So, if you know someone who missed these limited edition colors, grab the collection of minis at Gordmans and make their holiday special. And, get this. The set is on clearance for $3.48 (retail $15). By the way, I picked up the jumbo Yankee candle and the marble notebook (also seen below) for less than half their retail prices in the home goods section at Gordmans. Both items would make great last-minute gifts.

And, finally, here’s a little something for that friend whose smartphone is always dead. Battery life? What’s that? I keep car chargers, charge cables, and portable chargers on hand. And, I never pay full price for those items because I can stock up at reduced prices at Gordmans. These gold styles are so holiday-perfect too. If I were your secret santa, you’d get something you can use like this from me.

If you’ve got home-styling chops you want to show off, keep reading for a chance to win a Gordmans gift card!

Luxe for less

Vlogger Kayla Pritchard chose ‘luxe for less’ pieces to transition her home perfectly, from a different take on a traditional vase to this unique smokey glass pumpkin. Try out her tips for a similar look to your home.

Getting cozy

Youtuber Candice of Fancy That with Candice shared her two-part home haul for the holidays. Take her cue and get cozy with soft sweater slipper booties for lounging around the house, or chasing after her boys – who no doubt keep her on her (now toasty) toes.

Vintage and eclectic

Add a few choice quirky, eclectic pieces to your décor, like Leah of Keep Calm And Blush On did with this wavy cut marble tray with copper hardware. Its thick rope handles contrast the slick marble and give it subtle character, which she’ll use as a catchall or to display seasonal décor.

Harvest home

Blogger Shauna of Trying to Stay Calm was all about the harvest theme for a festive fall home. She stocked up in-store for decorating and gifting goodies for her family and friends. Keep a few pieces for each season handy, and you’ll always be ready for gifts and guests.

Bachelorette Party Planning

February 27, 2017

Bachelorette Party Planning

Attention bachelorette party planners! If your best friend forever, beloved sister or cherished cousin is planning her trip down the aisle, it’s time for you to start planning the bachelorette party. If the traditional night of bar-hopping isn’t exactly the bride’s style, choose from these alternatives to make it a night to remember.

SPA DAY

Does your guest of honor’s entourage span the ages from teen nieces to mothers and grandmothers of the bride? There’s nothing like a day at the spa to unite generations. Call ahead to your favorite local salon or day spa and book services of your choice, whether it be mani-pedis, facials or massages. As a parting gift to the bride, load up this beautiful tote with pampering gifts such as bath salts, candles and shower gel.

WEEKEND GETAWAY

Pack your bags (these Pucci floral cases will do!) and get out of town for a group trip. It doesn’t matter whether you go far or stay near—it’s the company that counts! For a lower-budget getaway, book a nearby hotel with an on-site pool and restaurant and stage a staycation. For a big splurge, pick a destination that’s special to the bride—maybe that’s a road trip to Vegas a la “The Hangover,” a pool party in Palm Springs or a ski trip to Boulder—and get outta town.

GO GOURMET

If your lady wolf pack tends toward the foodie side, sign up for a cooking class together. Check with your local community college, culinary school or kitchen store for options. Be sure to snap pics of everyone in action as well as your final culinary creations, then print your favorite photos to assemble in this Friends Forever album ($3.99) to give to the bride as a keepsake.

RETRO FUN

For a dose of nostalgia, recreate a childhood memory from the bride’s childhood. That might be spending a day at an amusement park, roller rink, laser tag arena or miniature golf course. Follow up the throwback fun with a group dinner or some decidedly grown-up fun, like a round of drinks at a wine bar or karaoke at your favorite local haunt. For a keepsake for the bride from the whole crew, have all each guest add a message or doodle on this autograph frame ($12.99).

Comment below and tell us what other fun ideas you have for a bachelorette party!

Winter Skincare

February 24, 2017

Winter Skincare

Between the dry air and cold temps, winter weather can really wreak havoc on your skin. With serene scents and mint green, frosted glass packaging fit for a spa, e.l.f.’s skincare line is just what you need to survive the waning days of winter … and use happily the rest of the year, too! Here’s the lowdown on five of our favorites.

Hydrating Gel Melt Cleanser ($10)

This gentle, shape-shifting cleanser starts as a smooth gel in the jar and then melts into a creamy lather in your hands. Nourishing ingredients such as argan oil, rose seed oil and vitamin C sooth your skin while removing makeup and dirt.

Tip: Make this your first step in your skincare routine in the morning and at night.

Hydrating Bubble Mask ($14)

This addictive mask is unlike any other we’ve tried before. First, you apply the clear gel to your face, being careful to avoid your eyes, nostrils and lips. Then, watch as the gel puffs up into a foamy, bubbly layer on top of your skin. How cool is that? Unlike sticky clay masks, which can be a challenge to wash off, this rinses clean quickly.

Tip: Secure your hair with a stretchy headband to keep flyaways from sticking to the mask.

Soothing Serum ($12)

Serums are seriously trending for their concentrated moisturizing power and anti-aging properties. This clean-smelling serum easily smooths over your skin and features shea butter, jojoba and aloe.

Hint: Apply the serum to your neck as well as your face at night before you to go bed. Allow to sink in before you add other products, such as eye cream (see below).

Illuminating Eye Cream ($10)

Here’s a secret of makeup artists everywhere: Eye cream is the key to getting a smooth application of concealer under and around your eyes. This cream is infused with Vitamin E, which blocks free radicals in the body to keep skin looking plump.

Tip: Use your ring finger to dab on the cream gently under your eye, from the bridge of your nose to your temple. You don’t want to pull or tug on the delicate skin around your eyes, so be as gentle as possible!

Daily Hydration Moisturizer ($8)

Serums and eye creams are perfect for nighttime, but to protect your skin from the elements during the day, you need a light but potent moisturizer. Thanks to aloe and cucumber, this daily hydration formula smells delicious and provides a protective barrier for your skin.

Hint: Apply before you put on your makeup in the morning to give a smooth foundation for your favorite cosmetics.

3 Ways to Style Tobacco Baskets

February 15, 2017
3 Ways to Style a Tobacco Basket

The hottest trend within the modern farmhouse look right now is adding a tobacco basket to your home decor. They have a rich history and add a great rustic look to your home.  Tobacco baskets date back to the 1800’s and were used to keep tobacco off the floor when storing the tobacco leaves in the warehouse. They were also used to take tobacco to the local markets. There are many other uses for them other than for storage purposes and they are great versatile piece to add to your home decor.

Love Letter

Add a personal touch to your tobacco basket by adding a letter that signifies your first or last name, or just your favorite letter. Glue or use wire to secure the letter to the basket. Then all you need in a simple nail to hang the basket on the wall and you are done.

Flower Fancy

Another great way to use multiple sizes of tobacco baskets is to layer then by setting them on a shelf against a wall. Then you can add other personal touches like a metal vase with flowers in a color that coordinates with your room. You can also add other home decor pieces to the mix and really show off your personal style.

Storage Savvy

The easiest way to style a tobacco basket is by simply adding some greenery to fill in the basket. This faux greenery is great because it looks real but you don’t have to worry about keeping it alive and it’s so easy to change out with the holidays and seasons.

Couples Game Night Ideas

February 13, 2017

Valentine’s Day is the biggest date night of the year, but that doesn’t mean you’re obligated to vie for a reservation at a fancy restaurant like everyone else in town. Hosting your own game night for two at home can bring out your playful sides. We’ve got four different game night suggestions to choose from based on when you met your partner. Pick from the options below and, in the end, everyone wins!

IN GRADE SCHOOL

Take yourself back in time with some of your favorite childhood pastimes. Play card games such as Go Fish or Uno, or whimsical board games such as Candyland, Chutes & Ladders or Twister.
On the menu: Continue the old-school theme by making mac ’n’ cheese, hot dogs or PBJs. Then, pick your favorite lunchroom drink and make re-imagine it as an adult beverage with the addition of your favorite spirit. Vodka and lemonade or rum and Hawaiian Punch are obvious choices, but you’re only limited by your own creativity (Ecto Cooler and Midori, anyone?). For dessert, popsicles, pudding cups or ice cream cones would be the perfect finishing touch.

IN HIGH SCHOOL

If you and your sweetie met in high school, take a trip down memory lane with a game that reminds you a sport you played, like Table Top Tennis, or tried-and-true a classic such as Monopoly. To really harken back to the kissing games of your youth, surprise your partner with a two-person game of Spin the Bottle or 7 Minutes in Heaven.
On the menu: Assemble a spread of snacks inspired by your favorite nostalgic treats of the time. Depending on when you met, that might be anything from pizza bagels to Doritos to s’mores. Make a toast with whichever soda you loved as a teenager–maybe it’s Dr. Pepper or Orange Crush–served in champagne flutes just for fun.

IN COLLEGE

Did you hit it off with your significant other at freshmen orientation, chemistry lab or a Greek party? Then a college-themed game night is just the ticket. See if you still have your drinking game prowess with the Bingo Shot Glass Game or Boozeball Shot Glass Game.
On the menu: This one’s a no brainer: Pizza and beer, of course! Order delivery from your favorite local pizzeria or buy all the fixing at the grocery store (dough, cheese, sauce and your favorite toppings) and roll one out together.

IN THE REAL WORLD

If you met as adults, it’s time to break out those board games that are just for grown-ups: Think Cards Against Humanity, Battle of the Sexes, Dirty Minds or Rotten Apples.
On the menu: Recreate a meal from one of your early dates, whether that was burgers and fries and a bar or a multi-course meal at a swanky restaurant. Or for less time in the kitchen and more time relaxing, throw a wine party for two with a cheese and charcuterie platter and a bottle of your favorite vino.

Homemade Raspberry Valentine Pop Tarts

February 10, 2017

Homemade Raspberry Valentine Pop Tarts

As a kid of the 80’s, Valentine’s Day meant making valentines boxes out of whatever you could find at home-most of us getting really creative with a cereal or shoe box, construction paper, tin foil, or any other materials we could find around the house.  It meant buying “valograms” for 25 cents through student council to send to your friends.  It meant exchanging valentine cards and all the excitement in seeing what candy you would get.  It meant a school party, where the afternoon was spent eating unhealthy food and playing games.  It was a day full of sugar and sweetness in so many ways!

These days, my favorite thing about Valentine’s Day is just showing the love to those in our lives! Whether homemade valentines sent in the mail, or fun messages wrote to classmates, just personalizing and actually putting love into whatever you give means a lot to some of us.  My favorite is baking fun and yummy treats to give to neighbors, friends, and even mail to our loved ones miles away!!! It’s just a good feeling to know you are thought of!  So this Valentine’s day, give your hand a try at these Raspberry Valentines Heart Shaped Pop Tarts.  Anyone receiving these is sure to feel the love this Valentine’s Day.

Raspberry Valentine Pop Tarts

Pastry Dough:

2 C flour

1 Tbsp sugar

1/2 tsp salt

1 C butter room temp

2 egg yolks

¼ C milk

Filling:

Raspberry jam

Egg Wash:

1 egg white

1 Tbsp water

(use fork to beat together) and set aside

Icing:

1 C Powder Sugar

1 Tbsp Cream

½ tsp almond flavoring

1 Tbs raspberry jam

(can add some red food coloring if you want icing darker)

Combine flour, sugar, and salt in large bowl.   Cut in 1C unsalted butter with pastry blender.  In separate bowl combine 2 egg yolks and 1/4 C milk. Using pastry blender mix with dry ingredients. Refrigerate dough overnight.

Roll dough (on floured surface) 1/8 inch thick (do not roll thicker, they rise).  Cut out heart shapes and place on parchment lined baking sheets. (I use airbake sheets).  Makes about 15 hearts(top and bottoms) of medium sized cookie cutter.  I divided dough in half so I knew how many bottoms I had.

Use a small melon baller to place two small drops of raspberry jam as shown.  Use finger to run egg wash around edges of hearts, place another heart on top and gently press around edges being careful not to squeeze jam out.  Then take small chopstick end and press around edges to seal.  Lightly brush with egg white wash and then bake at 350 degrees for 15-18mins, move to cooling rack.  Once completely cooled drizzle with frosting mixture. Let dry before placing in wax paper bags or storage.
