The cliche saying “it’s the little things in life” has always stood true to me. When I was in Chicago, I embraced this. I hated going to my job, so it was life’s small moments that stood out: a weekend trip to see my best friend, a chance to walk to Rocks, my favorite restaurant, the cookies at Treasure Island grocery store or finishing my favorite book. In 2018, there’s a word for this: hygge.
Pronounced “HUE-gah”, this noun is the Danish ritual of enjoying life’s simple pleasures. It means finding coziness in everyday moments. I bought my house for the upstairs. It reminds me of the house across the street from my grandparents that I spent a lot of time at growing up. It has original 1927 hardwood floors, an open layout and the cutest bookshelves on either side of the stairs as you walk up. I knew right away when I made an offer that I wanted a reading nook to create and cozy-fy (made that word up). I wanted just the thought of walking up the stairs and relaxing to be one of life’s small moments I loved.
I was able to start to create the space and concept of hygge that I envisioned with this collaboration with Gordmans. Hygge is not about having a perfect home, but making your home cozy and charming. I added cozy details to my space with the following items from Gordmans:
- Candles – Gordmans has great deals on brand-name candles (like Woodwick) and scents you will love for crazy good prices!
- A soft rug – obviously needed to sprawl out with a good novel. I’m currently reading Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris.
- A fuzzy blanket
- Picture frames – highlighting the best moments
- Pillows – I love the one that says “let’s stay home”. I think that’s my life motto as a homebody ?
- Accent pieces, like the gold basket or succulents
- Coffee mugs that make you want to wake up and start your Keurig
- A comfy Sherpa for a FRACTION of the price – this quarter zip was $11 at Gordmans!
Behind this picture, you can see where my super steep stairs ascend and have shelving units on each side. I love that I was able to create a reading nook with only a few Gordmans items (they had a whole section of possibilities including some furniture I might go back for…) and it feels like a totally cozy space. I’m also loving that these items would fit into my budget. Gordmans genuinely wants to have the lowest possible prices on the market. Gordmans tracks its competitors’ prices, but with the large assortment of merchandise that they carry, sometimes things are missed. Enter: the Lowest Price Guarantee (hence the price stickers with comparisons they have)! If you find a lower price on an item somewhere other than Gordmans, they will price-match. It’s easy – just bring the competitor’s ad, website or recipes where the item is listed, and Gordmans will match that plus give you a $5 Gordmans gift card! It’s very convenient for those of us who are budget-conscious.
Are you incorporating hygge into any of your home or lifestyle?
